Adrian Weckler, writing for Irish Independent, writes that Fitbit is offering refunds on its flagship Ionic smartwatch, saying that the device could cause a burn hazard and should not be worn anymore.

“The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard,” the company said in a recall notice today.

“If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device.”

The Ionic was sold in Ireland from 2017 to 2020. About 1.7m of them were sold around the world.

Fitbit, whose European headquarters is in Dublin, says that owners of an Ionic should dispose of it themselves instead of returning it to the retailer it was purchased from.

The company says it will offer a refund to Ionic owners who complete a registration form (at www.help.fitbit.com/ionic) with the Fitbit account and email details that their Ionic watch is associated with.
